AYURVEDIC-INSPIRED SELF-INQUIRY
Discover your nature.
Then notice what has shifted.
Ayurveda distinguishes your underlying constitution—prakriti—from the qualities that may be out of balance today—vikriti. This two-part reflection explores both.
PART ONE · PRAKRITI
Your underlying constitution
Answer from your long-term, natural tendencies—especially how you were in early adulthood or when well and rested. Choose what has been true for most of your life, rather than only this week.
YOUR CONSTITUTIONAL PATTERN
PART TWO · VIKRITI
What feels out of balance now?
Now answer from the last two to four weeks. This result may differ from your constitution: it reflects the qualities asking for attention today.
YOUR CURRENT PATTERN
Understanding the three doshas
A short guide to reading your result, and what to do with it.
Ayurveda sees everything, including you, as made of five elements that combine into three living energies called the doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. You are not one of them. You are all three, in your own particular proportions. Your constitution quiz shows which tend to lead in you (your prakriti, your lifelong nature); the second quiz shows which may be running high right now (your vikriti, your current pattern). No dosha is better than another, and there is no perfect type to aim for. The goal is never to become a different constitution. It is balance: letting each dosha express its gifts rather than its excesses. The principle for that is beautifully simple, and it is the single most useful thing to take from your result: like increases like, and opposites bring balance. So when something is running high, you gently invite in its opposite qualities.
Vata · space and air · the energy of movement
Vata governs everything that moves: breath, circulation, the nervous system, elimination, and the movement of thoughts. It is the source of creativity, enthusiasm and quick thinking. Its qualities are light, dry, cool, mobile and subtle.
In balance: lively, imaginative, adaptable, quick, energised.
Out of balance: anxiety, restlessness, a racing mind, difficulty sleeping, dry skin, bloating or constipation, feeling cold, and a scattered, ungrounded feeling.
To settle it, invite warmth, moisture and routine: keep regular rhythms for meals and sleep; favour warm, cooked, nourishing food and warming spices; keep warm; slow down; choose steady, grounding movement over anything frantic. Oiling the body (abhyanga) is deeply calming for Vata.
Pitta · fire and water · the energy of transformation
Pitta governs digestion and metabolism, body temperature, and the way we “digest” experience and ideas. It is the source of focus, drive, intelligence and courage. Its qualities are hot, sharp, light, oily and intense.
In balance: warm, focused, articulate, decisive, with strong digestion.
Out of balance: irritability and frustration, sharpness or criticism, overheating, inflammation, acidity or heartburn, skin flare-ups, and the particular burnout that comes from pushing too hard.
To settle it, invite cooling, ease and space: favour cooling foods and go easy on the very spicy, oily and fried; don’t skip meals; build in genuine rest and play, not only achievement; spend time in nature, water and cool air; and soften the inner critic.
Kapha · earth and water · the energy of structure
Kapha governs stability, strength, immunity, lubrication and steadiness of mind. It is the source of calm, endurance, loyalty and compassion. Its qualities are heavy, slow, cool, smooth and stable.
In balance: grounded, calm, strong, steady, nurturing.
Out of balance: heaviness and sluggishness, congestion, weight that holds on, low motivation, and a stuck or low, hard-to-shift feeling.
To settle it, invite stimulation, lightness and movement: get moving with more vigorous, energising exercise; favour lighter, warmer, well-spiced food; rise early; vary your routine and seek out new experiences; and clear a little clutter, inner and outer.
What to actually do with this
Treat your result as a mirror, not a label. The most useful question is a gentle one: which of these patterns sounds like you at your best, and which sounds like you when you’re stretched thin? That gap, between your nature and your current pattern, is where the small, steady adjustments above do their quiet work. In Ayurveda, consistent little shifts in daily rhythm almost always do more than dramatic ones.
And to echo the note below: this is educational self-inquiry, not a diagnosis or a prescription. Please don’t start restrictive diets, fasts, detoxes or supplements on the basis of an online result. If a pattern is persistent, or you’re pregnant, on medication, managing a health condition or living with an eating disorder, work with a qualified practitioner or clinician.
If you’d like to explore your constitution more deeply, and what a balancing rhythm might look like for you specifically, this is exactly the kind of work I do in my practice.
