Coherence Is a Process
From the field: notes from my doctoral research on yoga, Panchakarma and the subtle body
How do you measure something that the traditions themselves insist cannot be measured?
That question sat at the centre of my doctoral research, and I want to be honest from the outset: I don’t think you fully can. The yogis, vaidyas and lifelong practitioners who live these ancient sciences do not need a Bio-Well camera, an EEG headset or a peer-reviewed paper to know what their practice is doing. They live the benefit. Any instrument I bring to the door is, at best, listening from the threshold.
And yet I wanted to look, carefully, and without pretending the looking was the same as the thing itself. Out of that tension came the framework this research is built around: the Energy Coherence Index, or ECI.
What the ECI is (and isn’t)
The ECI is an integrative framework for mapping patterns of regulation across three domains at once: the physiological, the energetic and the experiential. It rests on a single assumption, one shared by transpersonal thinkers like Ken Wilber and Stanislav Grof and by the classical yogic model of the layered self: that psycho-spiritual transformation is distributed across the whole human system, not located in any one part of it. If that’s true, then no single measurement can capture it, and a multi-dimensional approach isn’t a luxury; it’s a requirement.
Crucially, the ECI is not a measure of spiritual attainment. It is not a score you can “win,” and a higher number does not mean a more enlightened person. It is a pattern-recognition tool, a way of noticing shifts in how a system organises itself around intensive practices such as Panchakarma, yoga and Kriya.
Three streams of data
The index weaves together three sources: electrophotonic imaging via the Bio-Well device, giving a visual and quantitative read of bioelectrical activity, including overall energy amplitude, left-right symmetry and a stress index; heart-rate-variability coherence, measured with HeartMath technology, which tracks the synchronisation between heart rhythm, respiration and the autonomic nervous system (higher coherence is associated in the psychophysiological literature, McCraty and others, with parasympathetic activation, emotional regulation and physiological resilience); and EEG via the Muse headband, capturing patterns of neural activity linked to attentional stability and meditative depth.
Together with the participant’s own subjective report, these form the axes of the index. I weighted the more established physiological measures, HRV and the electrophotonic data, more heavily than the EEG and subjective streams, precisely because I wanted the framework to be honest about which measures carry more methodological reliability. Scores are normalised against each person’s own baseline, so the ECI tracks intra-individual change rather than ranking people against a universal standard.
Coherence is a process, not a state
Here is the finding that most surprised me, and that I think matters most.
Coherence, as the ECI tries to capture it, is not a static condition you arrive at and hold. It behaves like a dynamic process. Any single measurement is really a snapshot of a system mid-reorganisation: a weaving of opposites, shadow and light, dissolution and reconstitution, caught in motion.
This changes how the data must be read. A dip in coherence is not a regression or a failure. Within an intensive intervention like Panchakarma, a period of decreased coherence may reflect exactly the opposite: a phase of destabilisation, processing and reorganisation that precedes reintegration. This non-linear pattern of expansion, dissolution and reintegration is precisely what both transpersonal theory (Grof; Washburn) and the classical yogic models would predict. The instrument, for once, agreed with the tradition.
What I am not claiming
I want to be as clear about the limits as about the findings, because that clarity is the point.
The ECI does not measure consciousness. It does not quantify spiritual experience. It operates at the level of observable correlates: measurable changes that may accompany shifts in subjective and transpersonal states, without ever standing in for those states themselves. The Bio-Well and similar technologies remain debated within mainstream biophysics, and I treat their outputs as exploratory signals, not settled facts.¹
The whole framework is a working prototype. The normalisation, the weighting, the composite score: all of it is an initial operational model, offered so that it can be refined, criticised and tested against larger samples and proper statistical validation. I would rather publish an honest prototype than an overconfident conclusion.
Because the real aim was never to prove that meditation “works,” or to reduce a 2,000-year-old science to a number on a screen. It was to ask a more modest and, I think, more interesting question: when something shifts in these deep states of practice, can we see its shadow move across the instruments? The early answer appears to be yes, and the shape of that shadow is a process, not a destination.

Notes
On the Bio-Well and GDV. The Bio-Well is based on gas-discharge visualisation (GDV / electrophotonic imaging), developed by Konstantin Korotkov. It is genuinely contested in mainstream biophysics, and I don’t want to overstate it: the “biophoton coherence” interpretation is an interpretive frame, not an established mechanism. I include it as one exploratory axis among several, weighted accordingly, and I lean harder on the better-validated HRV data. I’d rather you know exactly where the ground is firm and where it’s still soft.
